SBU Women’s Lacrosse Wins Another Conference Championship

Defeat Drexel for 2nd CAA crown and 10th conference title overall

The Stony Brook University women's lacrosse team continued its run of title-winning excellence by winning its second straight CAA Championship and 10th conference crown overall, defeating Drexel, 9-6, May 4 in front of a home crowd at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves, ranked 14th in the country, advanced to the NCAA tournament for the 11th time, and will open up against Niagara on Friday, May 10.

Stony Brook overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit with 7 second-half goals and a standout defensive effort, limiting the Dragons to only 15 shots and eight shots on goal. The Stony Brook defense also forced 18 turnovers and held Drexel's top scorer Corinne Bednarik to just one goal and a season-high seven turnovers.

Ellie Masera led all players with a game-high three goals, and Kailyn Hart added two goals for her 15^th multi-goal performance of the season, and 11^th in a row. Clare Levy, Charlotte Verhulst, Morgan Mitchell and Erin MacQuarrie also scored.

Masera, Verhulst, Hart, and Levy earned All-Championship Team honors for their standout play, with Masera named Most Outstanding Performer. Stony Brook's 17 wins this season are among the most in the nation. The Seawolves improved to 19-0 in conference and conference tournament games as a member of the CAA.

The Seawolves gathered to watch the NCAA tournament selection show on May 5, where they learned they will face off against MAAC champion Niagara. That game will take place at 2 pm May 10 in Syracuse, N.Y., and the winner will face No. 3 seeded Syracuse on Sunday, May 12.

Stony Brook's remarkable season included a plethora of CAA postseason honors - Masera was named Midfielder of the Year, while head coach Joe Spallina was named Coach of the Year. Masera, Hart, Alex Finn and Avery Hines were all selected to the All-CAA First Team. Verhulst, Levy and Jaden Hampel earned second team honors, while freshman midfielder Isabella Caporuscio was selected to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

The Stony Brook offense ranks first in the nation in assists per game (9.3) and second in points per game (25.1), and is tenth in the nation in scoring offense with 15.7 goals per game. The Seawolves are third in the nation in scoring margin (+8.0) and have the second-best scoring defense in the NCAA, holding teams to just 7.8 goals per game.
