Lakewood Avenue Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project Construction Look Ahead - Upcoming Road Closures

The City appreciates your ongoing patience with the work along the busy corridors associated with this project. Additional information regarding this project can be found at: https://www.durhamnc.gov/3976/Lakewood-Avenue-Sewer-Replacement-Project.

Lakewood Avenue will remain closed with detours between Mangum Street and Roxboro Street through late Summer 2024 to accommodate sanitary sewer installations. It is anticipated that Lakewood Avenue will be reopened to traffic in early September.

Roxboro Street will have continued lane closures between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave through Fall 2024 to accommodate sanitary sewer installations.

Additional information about the work and planned impacts are described below.

Planned Road / Lane Closures will occur as follows:

• Week of 8/19:
  • Road closure in Lakewood Avenue between Mangum Street and Roxboro Street.
  • Lane shifts in Roxboro Street between Hillside Avenue and Morehead Avenue.
• Week of 8/26:
  • Road closure in Lakewood Avenue between Mangum Street and Roxboro Street.
  • Lane shifts in Roxboro Street between Hillside Avenue and Morehead Avenue.
• Future Week(s):
  • Road closure in Lakewood Avenue between Mangum Street and Roxboro Street.
  • The Roxboro Street lane shifts are anticipated to remain in place.

Bicycle Lane and Sidewalk impacts will occur as follows:

• Portions of the sidewalk along Lakewood Ave between Mangum Street and Roxboro Street will have temporary closures.
• Portions of the sidewalk near work areas along Roxboro Street will have temporary closures.

Saturday and Sunday - August 17-18, 2024:

Week of August 19, 2024:

• Lakewood Avenue will be closed between Mangum St and Roxboro St to accommodate pavement restoration.
  • Traffic control signs and markings will be used a detour of traffic along Lakewood Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic will be detoured using Blackwell St, Morehead Ave, and the Mangum Roxboro Connector.
  • Southbound traffic will be detoured using Roxboro St, Jackie Robinson Dr, and Mangum St.
  • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted in this area.
  • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
  • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.
• Lakewood Avenue between Duke Street and Mangum Street will have varying lane closures and shifts to accommodate pavement restoration.
  • Detour signs will remain in place for the northbound Lakewood Avenue detour.
  • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for temporary lane shifts for the southbound lane of Lakewood Avenue during pavement restoration.
  • Pavement along Lakewood Avenue will be rough and uneven as final pavement repairs are being completed.
  • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
  • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
• Roxboro Street lane shifts will be implemented between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave to accommodate sanitary sewer installation.
  • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for the lane closures and shifts. Northbound Roxboro St traffic will be maintained.
  • Temporary pavement markings will be installed to shift traffic lanes along Roxboro St.
  • Additional lane shifts and/or flaggers will be used for temporary lane shifts during construction.
  • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted in this area.
  • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
  • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.

Week of August 26, 2024:

• Lakewood Avenue will be closed between Mangum St and Roxboro St to accommodate pavement restoration.

Projected Future Work (pending progress and weather):

• Lakewood Avenue between Mangum St and Roxboro St will remain closed to accommodate pavement restoration. Current projections indicate work in Lakewood Avenue to be completed in early September 2024.
• Roxboro Street lane shifts will remain in place to accommodate sanitary sewer installation. Sanitary sewer installations in Roxboro Street are anticipated to be completed in Fall 2024.
