Atlanta, Ga. - Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will open the new State Route 42/North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek to vehicular and pedestrian traffic before the morning commute Wednesday, July 24. The reconstruction and opening of this new bridge is a major milestone achieved for the I-85 at SR 42/North Druid Hills Road Project.
On April 26, a 90-day roadway closure was implemented between Buford Highway and West Druid Hills Drive to expedite the demolition and reconstruction of the old bridge, originally built in 1962. Overall, traffic moved around the work zone without major disruptions and the anticipated open to traffic date meets the 90-day contract period.
Georgia DOT appreciates the patience of motorists and coordination with community partners who allowed the department to build the new bridge structure quickly and safely.
"We are pleased to open the new North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek," said Georgia DOT Principal in Charge, Albert (Butch) Welch. "This is a major thoroughfare that carries an extensive amount of traffic, which is why crews worked diligently to replace the bridge and to minimize the duration of impacts to the traveling public."
The new bridge structure is wider and better equipped for increasing traffic levels in the area. It is also safer for pedestrians with wider sidewalks and ADA compliant ramps at crosswalks.
More work remains to complete all North Fork Peachtree Creek construction items.
When open, three vehicle lanes in each direction will be available, as well as pedestrian access on the bridge's southside. Construction activities will still be ongoing on the outside sections of the bridge as crews work to open the bridge to final configuration, which will include four lanes in each direction and an additional sidewalk on the northside.
Reconstruction of the SR 42/North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek is part of a larger project, the I-85 at SR 42/North Druid Hills Road: Interchange Improvements Project (P.I. 0016054), that will add a Displaced Left Turn for the westbound to southbound movement, construct an additional bridge over I-85, and add a braided ramp from the I-85 northbound off-ramp to I-85 northbound access road in DeKalb County. The overall project is scheduled to be substantially completed in 2025.
