Senator Cramer Delivers Remarks at North Dakota Peace Officers Association’s Annual Conference

FARGO - The North Dakota Peace Officers Association's (NDPOA) annual conference is underway in Fargo, gathering law enforcement officers from across the state to acknowledge their service and honor those who have fallen in the line of duty. The NDPOA has a history dating back to 1911, evolving from the Sheriffs' Association to become a unified voice for the entire criminal justice system in North Dakota.

During this year's NDPOA conference, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) delivered remarks highlighting the importance of supporting and implementing safeguards to defend those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting their communities.

"I never cease being amazed by your courage, your integrity, and some people may never know just how compassionate you are," said Cramer."Law enforcement policies should put local officers like you at the forefront so you can protect and serve your communities the best way possible. That's why I support programs like Regional Information Sharing Systems where Washington backs up the programs you manage and direct. We always strive to be better in North Dakota, but you have made us the best and we do not take your service for granted."

Cramer cosponsored and advocated for key legislation and resolutions to ensure officers have the resources and protections they need. He delivered a floor speech in May commemorating National Police Week and honoring TOP COP award recipient Fargo Police Officer Zachary Robinson. Officer Robinson is the first member of North Dakota's law enforcement community to receive the prestigious recognition.

The Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program enhances intelligence sharing with local, state, federal, and tribal criminal justice partners to support criminal investigations and ensure officer safety. In Fiscal Year 2024, Congress appropriated $44 million to RISS. While the program is congressionally funded each year, RISS is locally managed.

Additionally, Cramer joined U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) in cosponsoring the Protect and Serve Actto establish federal penalties for those who assault law enforcement officers, providing prosecutors with enhanced tools to address these crimes.
