Rosen Helps Introduce Bipartisan Resolution to Honor Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week

WASHINGTON, DC - Ahead of the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) helped introduce a bipartisan resolution to designate September 9-15, 2024, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. This resolution recognizes the crucial role of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in advancing higher education opportunities for Hispanic and Latino students across the country.

HSIs are accredited, degree-granting, public or private nonprofit institutions of higher education with 25 percent or higher total undergraduate Hispanic or Latino full-time students. There are 600 HSIs in the United States that enroll over 5.2 million Hispanic students, two-thirds of all Hispanic undergraduates, and 32.2 percent of total Pell recipients. Nevada is home to six HSIs: College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Nevada State University, Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The University of Nevada, Reno and Tuoro University are designated as Emerging HSIs.

"Hispanic-Serving Institutions in Nevada are doing critical work to educate Latinos in our state and give them the skills for the jobs of the 21st century," said Senator Rosen. "I'm proud to help introduce this bipartisan resolution to celebrate these important institutions and recognize their work to help Nevadans reach their full potential. I'll always work across the aisle to support Hispanic-Serving Institutions and their students."

As a member of the Congressional Hispanic-Serving Institutions Caucus, Senator Rosen has been a strong supporter of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and is a fighter for Nevada's Latino community. Last year, she introduced the bipartisan Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program Act to establish a Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program through the Small Business Administration to award grants to Minority Serving Institutions, including HSIs, to promote and increase opportunities for Latinos to start their businesses. Senator Rosen also successfully secured over $1 million in grant funding to expand programs and student support at two of Nevada's HSIs: the College of Southern Nevada and Nevada State College.
