Juvenile Arrested, Charged for the July 2024 Murder of USPS ...

Chicago, IL - A joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Chicago Police Department led to the arrest of a Juvenile subject who is charged with felony first degree murder. The investigation revealed the Juvenile as a suspect in the July homicide of USPS Letter Carrier Octavia Redmond.

On July 19, 2024, Redmond was delivering mail in the West Pullman neighborhood on the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue when the Juvenile exited a stolen white Dodge Durango, approached Redmond in the vicinity of South Harvard Avenue and West 122nd Street, and shot Redmond multiple times at close range. The Juvenile then fled the scene in the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle was recovered by law enforcement the following day.

U.S. Postal Inspectors from the Chicago Division and officers from the Chicago Police Department responded to the scene. Despite the heroic efforts of law enforcement officers and emergency personnel, Redmond died a short time later at a local hospital. Redmond was a wife and mother and is remembered as a staple to the postal customers she served.

"The safety and security of Postal Service employees and customers is core to the mission of the Postal Inspection Service," says Ruth M. Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. "There is no place for this type of senseless violence. When members of our postal family are targeted, postal inspectors will not rest until justice is delivered on behalf of the victims, their families, and our postal community. This arrest is the first step in securing justice for Mrs. Redmond. We hope this brings the Redmond family some semblance of relief. As our investigation continues, we maintain our call to the public to come forward with any information that may continue to bring those responsible to justice."

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service values our law enforcement partners for supporting our mission, extending appreciation to the Chicago Police Department, FBI, ATF, USSS, DEA, HSI, USMS, Illinois State Police, Worth Police Department, Burbank Police Department, and Orland Park Police Department, as well as the U.S. Attorney's Office - Northern District of Illinois, for their assistance in this investigation, as well as the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for their efforts prosecuting the case.

It is important to note that criminal charges are only allegations against a person. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
