Interior walls have been installed in the annex building at the Samuel L. Jones Hall Homeless Shelter (SJH), providing added privacy and security for residents and creating a voluntary sober living dorm, as well as office space for shelter staff. The project was completed with a $232,000 grant from the County of Sonoma through California's Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program.
Project Background
SJH is a City-owned facility which has been operated by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa since it opened in November 2005. The shelter provides up to 213 beds and wrap-around services to persons experiencing homelessness that have been prioritized by the Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) with beds designed for medical respite, public safety, and the City's Encampment Team or during emergent situations. A separate facility, the Annex, was constructed in 2020 to restore the shelter bed capacity that was lost due to social-distancing restrictions during the Covid-19. pandemic. The Annex comprises 60 of the total 213 beds provided on-site. Due to the emergency nature during the construction of the Annex, some improvements were deferred or provided in a temporary manner in order to expedite the opening. The installation of the interior walls is part of a secondary phase of the Annex project to address those items permanently.
