Launch of Ireland's Census Data Hub

CSO press statement, 26 August 2024, 11:00 AM

New Census Data Hub links geography and statistics for greater insights

  • New Census Data Hub has more than 18 million pieces of information about population and society across the State on topics such as housing, commuting, education, and occupation.

  • People will be able to explore, select and download data, and build maps of Census data which can be saved and shared.

  • Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) are available in the Hub for a range of geographical levels, from county to neighbourhood level. Hub data can be combined with other data sources and systems to provide insights for infrastructure and utilities planning, regional analysis, and socio-economic research.

  • The CSO has created three video guides to help users navigate the Census Data Hub. Ireland's Census Data Hub, and videos, are available at census.geohive.ie.

Enhanced Census Data Hub provides Census 2022 and 2016 results across a range of geographical areas from county and regional level to small areas

Are you starting a new business and want to know about the people living in the catchment area? Are you considering moving to a new area and want to know more about the people living there? Do you need information on people and society in an area to support a local government policy initiative?

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is today (26 August 2024) launching a platform which combines Census 2022 and 2016 datasets with boundary data from Tailte Éireann (TÉ). This is a collaborative project between the CSO and TÉ to link geography and statistics to provide insights about our population, from larger regional breakdowns down to small areas at neighbourhood level.

The Census Data Hub provides a wide range of information and has almost 800 variables across 15 themes over eight levels of geography. There are more than 18 million pieces of information available on population and society across the State. People will be able to explore, select and download data, and build maps of Census data which can be saved and shared.

This Census Data Hub allows people to use Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) and combine them with other data sources and systems for a range of purposes, including infrastructure planning, regional analysis, and socio-economic research. The catalogue of topics hosted on the State's Open Data Portal includes data from areas such as Arts and Culture, Environment, Health, and Housing. The availability of SAPS data across a range of geographical levels, from county level right down to neighbourhood level, means that the Census Data Hub can be used for policy development, planning, and analysis.

The levels of geography in Census 2022 include:

  • CSO Small Areas 2022 (18,919)
  • CSO Electoral Divisions 2022 (3,420)
  • CSO Towns/Urban Areas 2022 (867)
  • CSO Local Electoral Areas 2022 (166)
  • Administrative Counties (31)
  • Limistéir Pleanála Teanga [Language Planning Areas] (26)
  • NUTS3 Regions (8) (see Editor's Note below)
  • Provinces (4).

Ireland's Census Data Hub is available at census.geohive.ie. For information on 'How to use the Census Data Hub in three easy steps' see the Help & Resources section. Learn how to use the Census Data Hub with our user guides and instruction videos. These have been compiled into a playlist.

The three videos in the playlist, and their suggested running order, are as follows:

Statistician's Comment

Commenting on Ireland's Census Data Hub, Sheelagh Bonham, in Census Dissemination, said: "The CSO is delighted to launch this enhanced Census Data Hub of Census 2022 and 2016 datasets, to facilitate the growing need to link demographic statistics and geography over time.

The Census Data Hub is a fantastic resource as it brings together Census datasets from 2022 and 2016 and boundary information from county and regional level, right down to small areas at neighbourhood level. This means that there are more than 18 million pieces of information for people to explore. We have also produced three videos to help people navigate the Hub and create their own maps using Census Data. This will be an invaluable resource for everyone and particularly for those involved in the areas of planning or policy, regional analysis, or socio-economic research.

The Hub is a collaborative effort between CSO and TÉ. The CSO provides Census data while TÉ provides official boundary information for the State. Combining these authoritative sources into a single website enhances the ability of Public Bodies, Civil Society organisations and businesses to obtain geographical and statistical information.

The CSO welcomes comments and suggestions from users about this new resource, which can be sent to [email protected]."
