Washburn Tech Earns Hardware

Topeka, Kan. - A group of seven Washburn Tech students spent many hours learning and practicing this year, and their work has paid off yet again. Washburn Tech's Quiz Bowl team recently returned from the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, Ga., where they earned bronze medals.

This is the Quiz Bowl team's second consecutive national award after winning silver medals last year. The prize-winning team consists of Zevin Para-Cremer, Topeka, cabinet and millwork; Corey York, Silver Lake, information systems technology; William Sevy, Topeka, information systems technology; Alex Runnebaum, Topeka, cabinet and millwork; Ethan Maldonado, Topeka, automotive collision repair; Aspen Lemon, Holton, cabinet and millwork; and Wyatt Raines, Topeka, automotive collision repair.

"These students have worked so hard this year. We practiced every week to stay up to date on current topics, along with learning all the SkillsUSA organizational information, as those two categories form the basis of most of the questions that are asked during the competitions," said Trudi Kenney, SkillsUSA Advisor.

The competition took two hours to complete with the group answering a total of 100 questions. "I'm extremely proud of all of the work our team put in to accomplish this," Kenny said.

In addition to the Quiz Bowl medal winners, Bailey Longstaff, Ottawa, won a silver medal in T-shirt design. She recently completed Washburn Tech's automotive collision repair program.

The SkillsUSA Championships is the nation's largest hands-on workforce development event for middle school, high school and college/postsecondary students enrolled in career and technical education programs.
