Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the final day of the High-Level Segment of the organisation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri reaffirmed the commitment of the international jewellery industry to support meeting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and implementing its Agenda 2030.

It was the fourth time that Dr. Cavalieri addressed the ECOSOC High-Level Segment, and once again CIBJO was one of only a handful of the thousands of ECOSOC non-profit organisation members to be invited to deliver to an oral statement before the UN body's annual meeting.

CIBJO received special consultative status in ECOSOC in 2006, and since then has served as a jewellery industry's sole representative in the organisation, which brings under one umbrella government, business and civil society in the effort to support the United Nations development agenda.

Speaking during a session entitled "Multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow: the role of ECOSOC towards a sustainable and resilient path by 2030," Dr. Cavalieri noted that "We are fully committed to the stated theme of the 2024 ECOSOC High Level Segment, to reinforce the 2030 Agenda and to eradicate poverty during these times of multiple crises, through the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions."

"There is no contradiction in a luxury product industry committing itself to helping solve the world's most pressing economic, social and environmental challenges," the CIBJO President said. "Our raw materials are sourced predominantly in economically under-developed regions of Africa, South America, Asia and the South Pacific, as are many of our key stakeholders. We have an overriding strategic interest in partnering with governments and the international community to supporting the stated goals and principles of the Declaration on Future Generations, and in particular to help eliminate the intergenerational transmission of poverty and hunger, while providing a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment."

"Our world faces unprecedented challenges, but together we still have the opportunity to construct a better future for all, building resilience and leaving no one behind," said the CIBJO president, concluding his statement.
