RTI International to host 2024 North Carolina Society of Toxicology annual meeting

Experts to discuss emerging issues in microplastics

Research Triangle Park, N.C. - Nonprofit research institute RTI International will host the North Carolina Society of Toxicology (NCSOT) annual meeting on October 9, 2024, at its Research Triangle Park campus. The theme of this year's meeting, "Microplastics and Macroconcerns: Emerging Issues in Microplastics Research," will bring together experts and researchers to explore the potential impacts of microplastics exposure on human and ecosystem health.

The event will feature keynote presentations by Dr. Austin Gray from Virginia Tech and Dr. Imari Walker-Franklin from RTI International, both recognized experts in the field of microplastics research.

"Microplastics represent a growing environmental and health concern that demands our attention," said Walker-Franklin, research chemist at RTI. "This meeting provides a crucial platform for researchers, policymakers and industry professionals to collaborate and advance our understanding of microplastics' potential impacts on human health and ecosystems."

Microplasticsare plastic particles as large as the length of a pearl and can reach sizes smaller than the width of a human hair. Microplastics come from the breakdown of larger plastic polluting the environment and have been found in air, water bottles, food and the various parts of the human body.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in innovative research and participate in panel discussions on toxicological concerns related to microplastics, both within North Carolina and globally. The daylong event will also highlight emerging research from NCSOT trainees and members, with trainee awards presented for top poster and platform presentations.

Building on the success of the 2023 NCSOT meeting, which welcomed over 240 attendees to RTI's campus, the 2024 event is expected to attract a diverse group of toxicologists, environmental scientists and health professionals.

Registration for the event is now open and will close on September 28, 2024.

Due to security restrictions on the RTI campus, advance registration is required, and there will be no on-site registration available.
