Switzerland and Spain intensify exchange of information on nuclear safety and radiation protection

ENSI and the Spanish nuclear safety authority CSN have signed a memorandum of understanding to increase the exchange of nuclear regulation experience and information between Switzerland and Spain.

At the end of June 2024, ENSI Director General Marc Kenzelmann and Juan Carlos Lentijo, President of the Spanish nuclear regulator, Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (CSN), signed a memorandum of understanding. The signing took place on the fringes of the ENSREG conference, the meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group in Brussels.

Switzerland and Spain: Similarities in the civil nuclear energy program

"Through this agreement, we are strengthening the already excellent cooperation that we enjoy with the Spanish regulator," said ENSI Director General Marc Kenzelmann. "Our countries share lots of similarities in their civilian nuclear energy programmes, which is why we can both benefit from an even greater exchange of information". The aim of the Memorandum of Understanding is for the two countries to exchange information in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection.

Bilateral agreements in line with the International Strategy 2024

Through the bilateral agreement, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) is further implementing its International cooperation strategy. On the one hand, knowledge gained from the international exchange of information and experience is of benefit for ENSI's regulatory activities. On the other hand, through its international commitment, ENSI ensures that Swiss concerns are represented in the preparation of international regulations on nuclear safety and security.

ENSI has already concluded similar bilateral cooperation agreements with a number of foreign regulators including Germany, Canada, Italy, Austria, the USA, Finland and the EU.
