The Oklahoma State University Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History's Fall 2024 BA Studio Capstone Exhibition is in its final week at the Gardiner Gallery of Art. The show, which features the talent of 21 graduating studio art students, closes Dec. 6.
"There was no overarching concept for the exhibition," Gardiner Gallery Director Lindsay Aveilhe said. "The BA students get to showcase their top works completed during their studio art program. Typically, we allow them up to five artworks, generally their best produced during the program. With 21 students - the most we've had in a graduating capstone show thus far - the exhibition includes over 100 works."
The students' art includes a multitude of mediums that reflect the progress and knowledge students have gained from their time in the program.
"You can find works across almost all media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and jewelry," Aveilhe said. "They include their artist statements, which summarize their artistic practice. These have been refined over the course of their studies."
Student artists like Paige Nguyen use this opportunity to showcase their heritage. Nguyen's pieces use printmaking to highlight Vietnamese culture and delve into the differing traditions and lifestyles she grew up around.
"I often explore how mundane actions and beliefs in Vietnamese households have transitioned and blended over generations to become more Americanized within my life and family," Nguyen said. "Art has also been a visual way to communicate with my family and my broader audience without being able to physically speak to them."
Beyond showcasing their artwork, the capstone process equips students with professional skills needed for future success.
"The student artists must know how to get their work installation ready to be hung on the wall or displayed, as well as develop the ability to talk and write about their work," Aveilhe said. "These skills are crucial for the artists to continue to thrive in the art world when they graduate."
The Fall 2024 BA Studio Capstone exhibition is open to the public through Dec. 6. Find more information on the gallery's website.
