Deutschheim State Historic Site hosts winery open house…

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 20, 2024 - Deutschheim State Historic Site will host an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the newly revamped Strehly House Winery, located at 130 West Second St. in Hermann. Visitors are invited to tour this historic winery and visit with Site Administrator Lori Cody, who will share future plans and answer attendees' questions.

The winery's history goes back to 1843, when Carl Strehly, publisher of the Hermanner Wochenblatt weekly newspaper and his editor, Eduard Muehl, acquired land on one of the eastern hillsides in town to plant a vineyard. Unfortunately, Muehel died in 1854, but Strehly continued to build the winery, which opened in 1857.

The current exhibit, located in the winery's pressroom, offers a stunning forced-perspective wall mural in the form of full-size photos of the extensive cellar below, which gives the visitor an impression of gazing into the actual cellar. Also on display is a collection of cask- and barrel-making tools, antique winemaking equipment, and the Bacchus cask made for Franz Langendoerfer in 1875.

Missouri Wines team members will be on hand during the exhibit opening, featuring local Missouri wines for tasting. For further information, call 573-486-2200. There is no admission fee for the event.
