Stony Brook University Convenes Community Advisory Committee Meetings to Advance Vision for Southampton Campus

Stony Brook, NY - August 9, 2024 - Stony Brook University has convened working meetings for its Southampton Community Advisory Committee tasked with providing strategic advice and guidance for the future development of the university's Southampton campus.

The Advisory Committee, which meets monthly as a working group, is composed of 35 community members, government officials, and campus leaders. Members include representation from the Shinnecock Nation Council of Trustees, the Long Island Association, the Long Island Federation of Labor, the Long Island Farm Bureau, the Southampton Arts Center, and Suffolk Community College.

The Advisory Committee also has elected officials including Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Senator Anthony H. Palumbo, Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker, Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore, and Village of Southampton Mayor William Manger.

Stony Brook leadership includes Dr. William Wertheim, Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine; Carol Gomes, CEO and Chief Operations Officer, Stony Brook Medicine; William Herrmann, Vice President for Facilities; Wendy Pearson, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives; Carl Mills, Assistant Vice President for Government Relations; Barbara-Jo Howard, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing, Stony Brook Hospital Southampton, and several others. Pearson is leading the meetings.

"It was important that the committee accurately reflect the constituencies and industries in the East End. It took some time to assemble this amazing group, and we are off to a great start," said Wendy Pearson, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and convener of the Advisory Committee. "We will continue to add more voices to ensure we have the right mix and balance."

Pearson added, "The committee members are not here to serve as a rubber stamp, but as a sounding board on our plans, advocates for the East End, and co-creators of our future."

The main responsibilities of the Committee include providing strategic advice and feedback on proposed initiatives and plans for the Southampton campus; collaborating with fellow committee members and university leadership to develop and advance shared goals and objectives; and serving as ambassadors for the Southampton campus within their respective communities and networks.

Over the next six to nine months, the committee will work together on a stakeholder-informed comprehensive plan for the Southampton campus that:

  • Ensures financial sustainability
  • Identifies the community, non-credit, and academic programs that the community needs
  • Aligns with the Facilities Master Plan for the Southampton campus
  • Supports and increases the healthcare workforce in the East End
  • Builds momentum for a new hospital and workforce housing
  • Maintains and strengthens community engagement and support
