Washington, D.C. - Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the following statement on a Russian court's conviction of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who has been wrongly detained in Russia since March, 2023.

"I strongly condemn this Kremlin-controlled court's sentencing of Evan to 16 years in a Russian penal colony. He is wrongfully detained in Russia and was subjected to a Soviet-like show trial simply for doing his job as a reporter. The administration mustget Evan and every other wrongfully detained American in Russia home, including Alsu Kurmasheva and Paul Whelan."
