The summer issue of Synthesis magazine is online

(SACRAMENTO)

The summer 2024 issue of Synthesis magazine is available. The biannual magazine of UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center shares news about advanced treatments, promising scientific discoveries and efforts to reach out to the community.

This issue's cover story features a grateful cancer patient who fulfilled a bucket list wish thanks to his medical team. His Mount Everest trek inspires others to pursue their dreams no matter the challenge.

The magazine also includes progress being made at the cancer center in finding a cure for liver cancer and new technology bringing hope to pancreatic cancer patients. Another discovery may lead to a "switch" to kill cancer cells that could benefit patients including those with ovarian cancer.

Readers will also learn about the link between cancer and poverty. Our new report shows that lung, liver, stomach and cervical cancer rates are causing an unfair cancer burden for people in marginalized areas. In another article, learn why the people eat, or have access to eat, can affect their risk of cancer. That's also why we have a new Foods that Fight Cancer project to tell you about.

There's no reason you can't have fun - and even "compete "- while taking a swing at raising money for cancer research. Find out about the Sunday on the Green golf fundraiser, which was started by a patient and his wife.

We also introduce you to the wife of a U.S. Marine who tells us that his sense of duty inspired him to give back after receiving treatment for a cancer that, after a gallant fight, eventually took his life. He lives on, however, with his generous and enduring gift.

These stories and many more can be found in the latest issue of Synthesis. Sign up to receive a free subscription to the print version of Synthesis.
