Notice of Amendments to District of Kansas Local Rules of Practice Effective on August 26, 2024redline...

The United States District Court for the District of Kansas will amend the Local Rules of Practice effective August 26, 2024. A redline version of the local rule amendments is available on the court's website.

In 2022, Chief Judge Eric F. Melgren commissioned a comprehensive review of the local rules applicable to criminal cases. United States Magistrate Judge Rachel E. Schwartz was appointed as Chair of the Criminal Rule 2 Committee along with court staff and criminal practitioners from Kansas City, Topeka, and Wichita. The committee focused on three key areas. First, the committee reviewed each civil local rule to determine which ones apply in the criminal context and eliminate any ambiguity. Second, the committee recommended elimination of duplicative and obsolete rules. Third, the committee recommended that three local rules be converted to standalone plans: LR 38.1 (Jury Plan), CR 44.1 (Representation of Indigent Defendants - CJA Plan), CR 50.1 (Speedy Trial Act Plan).

The court extends gratitude to the practitioners appointed to the Rule 2 Committee for participating in the process and lending their time and expertise.
