Transcript: Mayor Adams Appears On Univision’s “Noticias Univision 41”

Adriana Vargas-Sino: El alcalde de Nueva York, Eric Adams, conversó con nosotros en la alcaldía sobre la orden ejecutiva migratoria firmada por el presidente Joe Biden y también sobre el reversazo de varios cortes del presupuesto en programas educativos para la ciudad, entre otros temas. Translation: The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, spoke to us in City Hall about the executive order signed by President Joe Biden and also about the reversal of several budget cuts in education programs for the city, among other issues. Here is the interview with the city's top authority.

Your administration has made an announcement that for many was miraculous, practically $127 million that will not have to be cut and will go to the schools. How will the students of New York feel this impact?

Mayor Eric Adams: La administración anterior puso mucho dinero en el Departamento de Educación que iba a desaparecer en 2024 porque eran dólares del COVID. El gobierno federal nos dio dinero para COVID, pero todos esos dólares iban a desaparecer. Gracias a ingresos mejor de lo esperado en la ciudad y a un manejo fiscal inteligente, pudimos conseguir dinero para programas como Summer Rising y otras iniciativas como el 3-K y el Pre-K, y así pudimos mantenerlos.

Translation: The previous administration put a lot of money into the Department of Education that was going to disappear in 2024 because it was COVID dollars. The federal government gave us money for COVID, but all those dollars were going to disappear. Thanks to better than expected revenue in the city and smart fiscal management, we were able to get money for programs like Summer Rising and other initiatives like 3K and Pre-K. And that's how we were able to maintain them.

Vargas-Sino: ¿Cómo va a sentir Nueva York el efecto de esta orden ejecutiva firmada por el presidente Biden?

Translation: How will New York feel the effect of this executive order signed by President Biden?

Mayor Adams: La meta es, si lo piensa, que hemos tenido más de 200.000 migrantes en busca de asilo ingresando a Nueva York. Y muchos, primera y segunda generación de neoyorquinos en una ciudad de inmigrantes, están muy preocupados por esto. Lo oigo cuando voy a Washington Heights, en Harlem, cuando me muevo en la ciudad. Lo que el presidente está diciendo es que hay que monitorear lo que ocurre en la frontera, controlarlo mejor. Entiendo que más citas van a estar disponibles, que vamos a buscar una estrategia que permita que la gente venga a buscar su sueño americano y no termine en una pesadilla.

Translation: The goal is, if you think about it, that we have had more than 200,000 migrants in search of asylum entering New York. Many first- and second-generation New Yorkers in a city of immigrants are very worried about this. I hear it when I go to Washington Heights, in Harlem, when I move throughout the city. What the president is saying is that we must monitor what happens on the border, control it better. I understand that more appointments will be available, that we are going to look for a strategy that allows people to come and look for their American dream and not end up in a nightmare.

Vargas-Sino: Pero el alcalde Adams cree que el problema no es solo ordenar el ingreso por la frontera, sino además vetar a quienes ya están aquí. Como al joven de 19 años que disparó contra dos oficiales en Queens y quien ya recibió cargos.

Translation: But Mayor Adams believes that the problem is not only to order entry through the border, but also to vet those who are already here, like the 19-year-old who shot two officers in Queens and who has already been charged.

Mayor Adams: Es un privilegio estar en nuestro país. Si violas ese privilegio al dispararle a dos oficiales de la policía, este sospechoso que también es buscado por una ola de robos y potencialmente dispararle a un civil, no podemos permitir a la gente que se mantenga en nuestro país si traen violencia contra ellos mismos u otros habitantes de la ciudad. La mayoría de personas en busca de asilo quieren trabajar y perseguir el sueño americano, así que debemos tener un proceso para vetar a la gente y que aquellos que violan la ley sean responsables.

Translation: It is a privilege to be in our country. If you violate that privilege by shooting two police officers, this suspect who is also wanted for a wave of robberies and potentially shooting a civilian, we cannot allow people to stay in our country and bring violence against themselves or other inhabitants of the city.Most people in search of asylum want to work and pursue the American dream. We must have a process to vet people and that those who violate the law are responsible.

Vargas-Sino: Adams cree que la salida a la crisis migratoria también le compete al congreso.

Translation: Adams believes that the exit to the migrant crisis is also up to Congress.

Mayor Adams: Eso espero. También creo que el congreso debería oírlo, ya que necesitamos una verdadera reforma migratoria. La gente quiere venir a este país, pero debemos hacerlo de forma ordenada. No solo en Nueva York, sino cuando veo a Denver, Los Ángeles o todas estas ciudades que sienten el impacto de un sistema migratorio que el congreso debería arreglar.

Translation: I think that also Congress should hear it, because we need real immigration reform. People want to come to this country, but we must do it in an orderly way. Not just in New York, but when I see Denver, Los Angeles, or all of these cities that feel the impact of an immigration system that Congress needs to fix.

Vargas-Sino: El alcalde Adams también destacó los logros y aportes de la comunidad puertorriqueña en la vida de Nueva York y del país, desde la cultura, varias victorias legales como la educación bilingüe, aportes al arte, por supuesto el rol de la jueza Sonia Sotomayor como la primera hispana en llegar hasta la Corte Suprema. Entre otros, el alcalde invita al desfile del próximo domingo para honrar el legado boricua.

Translation: Mayor Adams also highlighted the achievements and contributions of the Puerto Rican community in the life of New York and the country. From the culture to various legal victories, such as bilingual education, contributions to the arts, of course, the role of Justice Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic to reach the Supreme Court. Among others, the mayor invites everyone to the parade next Sunday to honor the Boricua legacy.
