Grand Opening of New Boise Fire Station #5

October 18, 2024

The City of Boise, the Boise Fire Department, and community members joined together to celebrate the grand opening of Boise Fire Station #5 in downtown today. The new state-of-the-art, two-story fire station replaces the city's oldest operating fire station that was built in 1951 in the same location.

"Today marks a significant milestone for our community as we open the new fire station downtown. This facility not only enhances our emergency response capabilities but also prioritizes the health and safety of our firefighters," said Boise Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer.

The new Station 5, located on 16th Street, houses Ladder 5, Engine 5, and also a future Squad 5. The building features a dedicated decontamination storage room for firefighters' contaminated gear, helping to keep harmful toxins out of their living quarters. The building is 100 percent electric with photovoltaic rooftop panels and is also equipped with charging stations to help achieve the city's energy goals.

"We're proud to support our firefighters with the best resources while taking a significant step towards a clean future for our city," said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean. "Located in the heart of downtown, Station 5 has been an important part of our community, and opening this modern, all-electric fire station strengthens our commitment to public safety and reflects our dedication to sustainability and innovation."

This is the fourth fire station to be built in this location, and it holds a lot of Boise Fire history dating back to 1901. To honor that, the fire station also includes a public-facing Boise Fire historical display that features artifacts from when the department was first established in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

"We are proud to honor our past while continuing to enhance our capabilities for the growing community we serve," Niemeyer said. "We welcome everyone to join us for a tour, explore our history, and meet the firefighters who are dedicated to serving our downtown community."
