UAB summer commencement will be Aug. 10 at Bartow Arena

Summer graduation ceremonies for the University of Alabama at Birmingham will be held Saturday, Aug. 10.

This semester, at least 1,621 students are eligible to graduate. More than 892 students are expected to walk in two ceremonies, which will be held inside Bartow Arena. The UAB Graduate School this semester will confer the university's highest degrees on 198 doctoral students from 27 states and 14 countries, representing 40 disciplines.

The first ceremony, for all graduate students, including master's, educational specialist and doctoral, will be at 9:30 a.m. The second ceremony, for undergraduate students, will be at 2 p.m. Doors will open one hour before each ceremony.

UAB provides accommodations for graduates and guests with special needs. Visit the commencement website for full details about the ceremonies, parking and more.

Students who will walk in the ceremonies are asked to wear flat shoes. There is no limit on the number of guests who can attend the ceremonies, and parking is free. Thirteenth Street South between Sixth Avenue and University Boulevard will be closed to through traffic Saturday.

The academic mace bearer will be Tino Unlap, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences and director of the Biotechnology Program in the School of Health Professions. Last year, Unlap received the Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching, which is the highest award for teaching bestowed by our university.

The Faculty Brass Quintet in the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Music will perform for both ceremonies. The Alabama Pipes and Drums will lead the procession. Students Ford Beshirs, musical theater major, and Charity Seltzer, soloist with the UAB Gospel and Concert choirs, will sing the national anthem and the UAB alma mater for the graduate and undergraduate ceremonies, respectively.
