Thank you, LLM Graduates! A New Chapter of Your Life Begins!

On 12 July 2024, 38 students from 16 countries graduated from the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Transnational Crime and Justice program organised by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the University for Peace (UPEACE). Congratulations to all our graduates for achieving this significant milestone.

During the ceremony, Francisco Rojas Aravena, Rector of the University for Peace, emphasized, "On this special day, your graduation, you have achieved an important goal. From it, you will have new and great successes. As graduates, you know that UNICRI and UPEACE will always be your home. The exchange of multicultural, plurinational, and multiprofessional experiences will be a great treasure for each of you. You are ready to take big and small steps for peace, democracy, and a sustainable world. For a better world. You will encourage many to reinvent themselves, to reinvent ourselves in the face of great changes. You have left a mark. Now you mark a path for a better future with more justice and freedom. Be yourselves, broaden your vision, build your mission for a world of stability, peace, justice, and progress for all."

Leif Villadsen, Acting Director of UNICRI, added, "You should feel proud of what you have achieved as you have demonstrated dedication, commitment, and resilience. Each of you will continue on different and unique paths. However, you are all graduates of our Institutions and will make the best of the skills and knowledge you have acquired to promote justice and human rights and to advocate for a world free from violence and inequality. I hope that with the knowledge, support, and network you have gained, you will have the courage and ability to overcome every obstacle you shall face during your career."

Addressing today's global challenges, Francisco Rojas Aravena highlighted the importance of the LL.M. programme in preparing graduates to tackle complex issues such as conflicts, inequality, and the fragility of peace. He stated, "The promotion of peace requires an emphasis on the political-diplomatic dimension. It effectively prevents global and regional threats, as well as global and national polarization. Democracy requires each one of us, our participation and commitment."

Reflecting on history, Francisco Rojas Aravena remarked on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, "80 years ago, more than 10,000 young people died so that today we can enjoy, especially in Western Europe, freedom, prosperity, and democracy. This demands a responsibility from each and every one of us, to protect democracy, freedom, cooperation, solidarity, and peace. It is the legacy of grandparents." He connected this legacy to the mission of the LL.M. program, emphasizing its role in fostering justice and a sustainable and peaceful world.

Leif Villadsen encouraged the graduates to use their education as a foundation for leadership, integrity, and compassion in shaping the future.

Congratulations, Class of 2024. Renewed successes and best wishes for your future endeavors!
