Planning and Development Advises How to Avoid Contractor Scams

Augusta Planning and Development Offers Guidance on Selecting Contractors for Post Hurricane Repairs

[AUGUSTA, GA, - October 3, 2024] - In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Augusta, Georgia's Planning and Development Department is urging residents to take careful steps when selecting contractors for home or business repairs. As residents begin the recovery process, to avoid contractor scams it is crucial to ensure that repairs are done safely and up to code.

A list of tips are as follows:

• Current business license (Expires 12/31/2024 no other date options)

• Proof of insurance (surety bond and/or ACCORD)

• Make sure the license is for the services that they are offering. https://sos.ga.gov/

• Only hire/use licensed and bonded electrician's. https://sos.ga.gov/

• For out of state contractors check with their Secretary of State to see if they are currently registered. (Note: Also, some don't municipalities don't have business license requirements.)
