Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met today with Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi in Aqaba. The Secretary affirmed U.S. support for a Syrian-led political transition that leads to an accountable and representative Syrian government chosen by the Syrian people. He underscored the importance of all actors in Syria respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms; upholding international humanitarian law; taking all steps to protect civilians, including members of minority groups; facilitating humanitarian access across Syria, particularly access to former regime prisons and detention centers; preventing Syria from being used as a base for terrorism or posing a threat to its neighbors; and ensuring that any chemical weapons stockpiles are secured and safely destroyed.
Secretary Blinken underscored the strength of the United States-Jordan strategic partnership and our 75 years of diplomatic relations. The Secretary and Foreign Minister also discussed the urgent need to conclude a ceasefire in Gaza that secures the release of all hostages and emphasized the need for a substantial increase in the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians across Gaza. Secretary Blinken expressed his appreciation for Jordan's continued leadership in providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians in Gaza through the Jordan Corridor.
