W&L's Staniar Gallery Presents Liz Liguori's 'Where We Meet' The solo exhibition will run from Sept. 5 through Oct. 18 and kicks off the gallery's fall season.

Washington and Lee University's Staniar Gallery is pleased to present "Where We Meet," a solo exhibition by artist Liz Liguori. The exhibit will be on view from Sept. 5 through Oct. 18. Liguori will also give an artist's talk on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall's Concert Hall, followed by a reception.

The exhibition and reception events are free and open to the public.

Based in New York, Liguori creates photographic, sculptural and time-based work that explores the infinite expressions of light. With process and experimentation as her touchstones, she blends traditional art-making methods with her own original technologies, including a technique of "painting" with light and photochemistry and fabricated equipment to produce large-scale works.

Liguori developed her art-making process in 2011 and uses light and photochemistry to challenge the assumptions and conventions of art. To produce her work, she manually bends and manipulates light (using modifiers such as prisms, water or glass lenses) to create compositions that "explore the essence of the photographic medium in the manner of abstract expressionism."

"Where We Meet," comprised of all new works, explores light as painting and sculpture. The exhibit is curated by Annabelle Rinhart.

Liguori's work has been presented in New York City at the La Mama Galleria, 222 Bower Art, Lazy Susan Gallery, Haven Arts and Fridman Gallery. Other selected exhibits include Abakus Projects (Boston, Massachusetts), the Taubman Museum of Art (Roanoke, Virginia), Reynolds Gallery (Richmond, Virginia), Jordan Faye Contemporary (Baltimore, Maryland), The Gallery at Serenbe (Palmetto, Georgia), Science Museum of West Virginia and the Armory Gallery (Blacksburg, Virginia). Liguori's artwork is highlighted in the book "The Mountain Lake Symposium and Workshop: Artists in Locale," to which she also contributed an essay on her process.

Liguori received her bachelor's degree in studio art from Drew University and her MFA in creative technologies from Virginia Tech.
