Caltrans To Begin Emergency Culvert Repair And Drainage Work In Merced County

Published: Jun 26, 2024

MERCED COUNTY - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to begin emergency construction work to repair a failed culvert and restabilize the roadway along State Route 33 (SR-33) just north of Gustine in Merced County.

The work is imperative to ensure the safety of the traveling public and to prevent catastrophic pavement failure which could result in an unforeseen highway closure. Road closures will be in place at Bambauer Road and Canal School Road on SR-33. Construction is scheduled to occur 24/7 and will begin Wednesday, June 26, at 6:00 p.m. with completion expected by Saturday, June 29, 2024.

Caltrans will have changeable message signs in place alerting motorists of the highway closure, potential delays, and available traffic detour. Oversized and permit load semi-trucks will not be permitted along the detour route and need to use Interstate 5 for travel between Newman and Gustine.

Motorists should expect delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. This work is scheduled to take place as listed above, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials and construction related issues.
