Volunteers Needed for Rivers Alive Cleanup, Oct. 19

SAVANNAH - Volunteers are needed for the local Rivers Alive Cleanup on Saturday, Oct. 19, part of an annual statewide campaign to protect and preserve local waterways.

This year's cleanup efforts will focus on Harmon and Hayner's Creek located at the end of Hurst Ave., south of Montgomery Crossroads at the River's End Landing. The river cleanup begins at 9 a.m.

Residents interested in volunteering should gather at River's End Landing to launch into the target waterways. A limited number of kayaks will be provided by Wilderness Southeast for volunteers to use. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own kayaks or small boats for this event.

Over the years, thousands of pounds of litter-mostly plastic bottles and Styrofoam cups-have been removed from Harmon and Hayner's Creek which are headwaters to the Vernon River.

In 2021, the City's Water Resources Department and The Ogeechee Riverkeeper installed and started maintaining four litter traps to keep litter from flowing into the Vernon River.

This event is part of the state of Georgia's October Rivers Alive campaign and is the largest single volunteer effort to beautify Georgia's waterways. The event is sponsored by Clean Coast, Ogeechee Riverkeeper and City of Savannah Water Resources and Sanitation Departments.
