National Diabetes Education Week - November 3-9, 2024, is a perfect time to recognize the many benefits of diabetes self-management education and support. This service is available locally and can help people living with diabetes at many different times in their lives.

November 4, 2024, CHICAGO, IL-The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists® (ADCES) is celebrating National Diabetes Education Week, November 3-9. National Diabetes Education Week recognizes the important role diabetes education plays in the management of the disease and the value of diabetes care and education specialists who provide this care and support. ADCES celebrates this week each year by recognizing the impactful efforts of its members.

Diabetes education provided through diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs give people with diabetes and related conditions helpful knowledge, skills and support that can help them live their best lives with diabetes and address potential challenges and concerns. While people can be referred to these programs at any time, there are four times when referring people to this program makes the most impact:

  • When first diagnosed with diabetes
  • At least once a year or when struggling to meet care goals
  • When new complicating factors arise, such as changes in physical and emotional health or basic survival needs
  • During significant life transitions and access to care

These programs are provided by diabetes care and education specialists and are covered by Medicare and most other insurance plans. By referring people with diabetes to these programs, we can improve health outcomes.
