City of Valdosta Recognizes August 2024 Employee of the Month

The City of Valdosta proudly recognizes Officer Joshua Abercrombie of the Valdosta Police Department as the Employee of the Month for August 2024. Officer Abercrombie was honored during the regular Valdosta City Council meeting on August 8, 2024, by Mayor Scott James Matheson and Valdosta Police Department Chief Leslie Manahan.

Officer Abercrombie's recognition comes after a commendable display of quick thinking and dedication to public safety on July 12, 2024. During a routine post-work walk down Patterson Street, Zoning Administrator Lauren Hurley and Media Coordinator Erica Thrift were unaware of an active pursuit by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department. As the chase approached the intersection of Mary Street and Patterson Avenue, Officer Abercrombie, who was in the vicinity, effectively intercepted the dangerous situation.

At the critical moment when Lauren Hurley and Erica Thrift were about to enter the crosswalk, Officer Abercrombie activated his siren to alert them. His swift action prevented them from stepping into the path of the fleeing suspect's vehicle, which disregarded the stop sign and sped through the intersection, closely pursued by deputies. The suspect's vehicle flipped multiple times before the chase concluded.

Lauren and Erica witnessed Officer Abercrombie's determined pursuit and subsequent apprehension of the suspect. His unwavering commitment to public safety, even at personal risk, exemplifies the dedication and courage expected of law enforcement officers.

"Officer Abercrombie's actions on that day were exceptional and truly embody the values of the Valdosta Police Department," said Chief Leslie Manahan. "His quick thinking and bravery undoubtedly prevented what could have been a tragic incident."

"The City of Valdosta is immensely proud of Officer Joshua Abercrombie. His quick thinking and courageous actions are a shining example of the commitment our officers have to the safety and well-being of our residents. We are grateful for his service and dedication to our community," said Mayor Scott James Matheson.

The City of Valdosta extends its gratitude to Officer Joshua Abercrombie for his exemplary service and dedication to the community.
