Alachua County, in collaboration with The City of Gainesville, has secured an $880,000 federal grant from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, with a $220,000 local match, to fund advanced planning and demonstration projects aimed at improving road safety. Gainesville ranks 9th in Florida for traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries and 8th for crashes involving vulnerable road users, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

"Ensuring roadway safety is a top priority for Alachua County," said Commission Chair Charles Chestnut IV. "This grant allows us to address critical concerns and implement solutions that will save lives."

The grant will support two major projects on County roads within the City of Gainesville:

1. Crash Analysis & Signal Alternatives for N 16th Avenue: With 1,182 crashes over the past five years, N 16th Avenue faces high crash rates, particularly from left-turn movements at intersections. This project will conduct detailed crash analyses, create traffic simulation models, and recommend safety enhancements to reduce severe and fatal crashes.

2. Complete Streets Evaluation on SW 20th Avenue: SW 20th Avenue has seen 1,206 crashes, including 22 severe and one fatal, in five years. This project will develop a comprehensive "complete streets" plan for this rapidly growing, underserved area. It will also implement and evaluate low-cost, high-impact safety measures, such as traffic calming devices and high-visibility signage.

This funding builds on the County's SS4A Action Plan and Gainesville's Vision Zero Action Plan, advancing efforts to create safer, more equitable roadways for all users.
