Need for a united and decisive legislative response to tackle homophobia in Europe

29.7.2024

Question for written answer E-001446/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Carolina Morace (The Left), Gaetano Pedulla' (The Left), Pasquale Tridico (The Left), Dario Tamburrano (The Left), Mario Furore (The Left), Valentina Palmisano (The Left), Danilo Della Valle (The Left), Giuseppe Antoci (The Left), Kim Van Sparrentak (Verts/ALE), Marc Angel (S&D)

In order to protect the fundamental rights of all citizens, it is crucial for the European Union to take a firm and unified stance against homophobia and violence based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Following on from the homophobic attack that happened in Rome on 14 July 2024, where two young men were brutally assaulted because of their sexuality, and many other similar cases recorded across different EU Member States:

  • 1.Can the Commission say what immediate measures it will take to effectively tackle homophobia and ensure the safety of LGBTQ+ people in Europe?
  • 2.Given the rise in the number of homophobic attacks and right-wing propaganda, can it propose legislation that explicitly identifies homophobia as a crime at EU level, adding it to the list of Eurocrimes, in accordance with Article 83(1) TFEU?
  • 3.What educational and awareness-raising programmes does it intend to promote in schools to combat the cultural and social decline that fuels such hate crimes?
