City of Long Beach Unveils New Legacy Business Program

Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Economic Development Department (Department) has announced that it will lead the Long Beach Legacy Business Program (Program) to recognize and champion longstanding establishments that have helped shape Long Beach into the vibrant community that it is today.

"Long Beach proudly recognizes the invaluable contributions of our longstanding businesses," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "Legacy Businesses are the heart of our community. Through this program, we celebrate their lasting impact and ensure their stories continue to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs."

The Program will help preserve the unique character and cultural identity of Long Beach by recognizing and creating a system of support for qualifying businesses that have operated within the city for at least 10 years and are significant contributors to its history and identity. Certified Legacy Businesses will be formally recognized in the Program's registry and receive a certificate, plaque and window decal to display in their establishment. Participating businesses will have access to free technical assistance, marketing and promotional support, networking and referral opportunities and more. Those interested in applying or nominating a business are encouraged to visit the Program's webpage to review eligibility requirements and complete an application.

"Legacy Businesses provide local employment opportunities, uphold the unique fabric and history of our neighborhoods and create gathering spaces for residents and visitors," said Economic Development Department Director Bo Martinez. "We proudly honor these establishments as cornerstones of our community and look forward to their continued influence and success for generations to come."

The Program was developed in direct response to Long Beach City Council direction to establish an official City of Long Beach Legacy Business Registry, a designation certification process and an associated system of services to recognize and support historic Long Beach businesses. The item was brought forward by Mayor Rex Richardson in April 2023 and was approved by the City Council in an eight to zero vote.

The City has partnered with Long Beach Heritage, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to historic preservation, advocacy and education, to expand its Legacy Business Program. The Program was originally started by the organization in 2022 and will now be facilitated by the City. Established businesses, which include a mix of nearly 40 eateries, hotels and specialty services, will be automatically entered into the City's registry. A list of participating businesses can be found on the Program website.

"Long Beach Heritage is proud that the Long Beach Legacy Business cultural heritage program we originated in 2022 will now be part of the City of Long Beach Economic Development Department," said Long Beach Heritage President Chris Hogan. "As part of the City's economic focus, the Program can expand its impact and provide greater resources to help our long-established, diverse local businesses. Long Beach Heritage looks forward to continuing to work together with the City to raise awareness and preserve Long Beach's rich cultural and architectural historic assets."
