Kellanova Unveils Breakthrough K 12 Innovation for 2024 25 School Year Jul 31, 2024

With a commitment to delivering breakthrough, insight-driven innovation, Kellanova, the global snacking powerhouse with a legacy stretching back more than 100 years, is poised to make a lasting impact on the K-12 foodservice industry with three new Eggo® items for the 2024-25 school year, available now, and a new Cheez-It®offering made with whole grain, which will be available in July 2025 for the 2025-26 school year.

First announced at the 2024 School Nutrition Association's Annual National Conference (ANC) in Boston earlier this week, the following products are now available to K-12 operators and include:

  • NEW Eggo® Froot Loops® Waffles mash up two classic brands to deliver a super-cool and convenient breakfast from Eggo®, the top breakfast brand in the K-12 market.1
    • The whole grain waffles offer the fruity flavor and aroma of Kellogg's® Froot Loops® cereal baked into each waffle.
    • They are made with colors and flavors from natural sources, have 5g sugar per serving and contain no high fructose corn syrup. The 5g sugar per serving aligns with the latest USDA regulations for the 2027/2028 school year and with K-5 regulations, which have the strictest dietary guidelines.
    • Each individually wrapped pouch includes two full-sized waffles, delivers 17g whole grain per serving and features ovenable single-serve packaging for ease of warming or to simply thaw and serve.
  • NEW Eggo® Grahams Original are bite-size, waffle-shaped grahams that deliver a classic graham taste with flavor notes of butter and vanilla.
    • They offer a full 2oz Grain Equivalent serving, packing in 17 grams of whole grains per pouch.
    • These grahams are convenient to serve at breakfast, breakfast after the bell, lunch, or a snack, bringing the Eggo® experience beyond the breakfast table.
    • Graham crackers are the most popular cracker type in K-12, growing by 4.7% in the last 12 months2 - these yummy bites will keep students coming back for more.
  • NEW Eggo® Grahams Cinnamon French Toast are lightly sweet with the taste of cinnamon French toast.
    • Bite-sized Eggo® Cinnamon French Toast are whole grain-rich with 17g of whole grain per serving, have no high fructose corn syrup and contain colors and flavors from natural sources.
    • They are packaged for portability so this snack can be eaten anytime students need a bite.
  • Eggo® Minis Blueberry Pancake has the classic flavor and fluffy texture of blueberry pancakes in a miniature form that taste great on their own- no syrup needed.
    • Eggo® Minis Blueberry Pancakes deliver 35g of whole grain per serving, are made with colors and flavors from natural sources and contain no high fructose corn syrup. They are also a good source of six vitamins and minerals.
    • Eggo® Minis single-serve pancakes are versatile and can be a convenient part of breakfast, breakfast after the bell or lunch. Eggo® Minis come in ovenable pouches but are also approved for thaw and serve.

In addition to the new 2024 products, Kellanova gave operators a sneak peek of products at ANC that will be available for the 2025 - 2026 school year, including:

  • Cheez-It® Spicy Buffalo, made with whole grain gives subtle tones of hot pepper sauce with aged cheese that provide snackable heat students are seeking.
    • Made with 8 grams of whole grain, Whole Grain Cheez-It® Spicy Buffalo offers the 100% real cheese taste students know and love from Cheez-It®, complemented with a classic buffalo sauce seasoning.
    • In fact, students are increasingly seeking out spicy flavored snacks, with spicy and hot flavor sales growing by $10M in K-12 vs. last year.3
    • Plus, Cheez-It® is the number one brand in cheese crackers in K-124, making this snack a win for students.
  • Cheez-It® Extra Cheesy, made with whole grain has the Cheez-It® taste students love with the sharp, tangy, and buttery notes of aged cheddar.
    • Whole Grain Cheez-It® Extra Cheesy satisfies students' cheesy cravings with this new, craveable Cheez-It® flavor made with even bigger cheese flavor.
    • Each serving has 8g of whole grain and is made with 100% cheese.
  • Kellogg's® Scooby-Doo!™ Baked Graham Cracker Snacks Chocolate offers a lightly sweet and satisfying chocolatey flavor that pairs perfectly with our crunchy, dippable graham cracker.
    • Students love the delicious taste and satisfying crunch of Kellogg's® Scooby-Doo!™ Baked Graham Cracker Snacks.
    • Grahams are a top sweet snack among kids and teens, rating higher than fruit snacks or chocolate sandwich cookies.5

In addition to unveiling this exciting innovation at its ANC booth, Kellanova also sponsored an education session titled "How to Market Like a 'Boss' to Change Hearts and Minds About the Food YOU Serve in K-12." David Grotto, Sr. Wellbeing & Regulatory Manager, Kellanova Away From Home, moderated the panel, which addressed the challenges school foodservice operators face, providing best practices for program advocacy among key stakeholders, marketing to increase student and parent engagement and future proofing menus against evolving regulations. Panelists Alyson Foote of Action for Healthy Kids and Steve Abbott from Campbell County Schools discussed strategies for improving student participation.
