FASEB Responds to Bipartisan RFI for Next Generation Cures Bill

FASEB Responds to Bipartisan RFI for Next Generation Cures Bill

Wednesday, August 7, 2024
On August 6, FASEB submitted comments in response to a House of Representatives Request for Information (RFI) regarding future legislation needed to advance biomedical research. The bipartisan RFI from Reps. DeGette and Bucshon seeks specific feedback on how to build upon the successes of the 21st Century Cures Act and ensure the U.S. can drive the next wave of scientific innovation.

FASEB's comments focus on the third RFI question related to additional reforms, support mechanisms, or incentives needed to improve the effectiveness of progress made thus far. Specifically, FASEB states that National Institutes of Health (NIH) could improve in the following five areas:
  • Stable funding and operational support;
  • Supporting the biomedical research workforce;
  • Improving the diversity of the biomedical research workforce;
  • Promoting data management and and sharing;
  • Reducing regulatory burden in biomedical research.
Additionally, FASEB notes that it recognizes the House Energy and Commerce Committee leadership's framework to reform NIH and urges Congress to solicit stakeholder feedback and conduct comprehensive hearings on potential structural changes before enacting any major reforms.
