Co-Founder of Balsam Lake Surf Club Shares Love of Wakesurfing with Community

Last week, Mark Pautsch, co-founder of the Balsam Lake Surf Club penned an editorial highlighting the importance of wakesurfing to his family, community, and lifestyle. Published in the Wisconsin Amery Free Press, Pautsch writes, "At 67 years old, some of the sports I enjoyed when I was younger are not as accessible as they used to be. I can confidently say that wakesurfing is a low-impact, invigorating activity suitable for all ages."
The Balsam Lake Surf Club serves to educate boaters on how to wake responsibly on the lake, ensuring access to the water for all boaters and the preservation of waterways. The organization plays a critical role in teaching proper etiquette for towed water sports.
The organization partners with a local marine dealer to promote responsible boating practices, such as staying more than 200 feet from shore, avoiding repetitive passes, and being mindful of music volume.
Pautsch continues: "Wakesurfing is not just a sport, but an activity for the entire family that allows multiple generations to share the joy and health benefits of being out on the water. From children to grandparents, everyone can participate, making it an ideal way to stay active and spend quality time together. It is encouraging to see my grandchildren learning to wakesurf alongside their parents and me, which helps bridge generational gaps through shared experiences."
As local lawmakers consider laws that impact boater access to public lakes, the Balsam Lake Surf Club and its local partners can be a model for other regions to continue to ensure that all users are able to access public waterways.
