The Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department thanks the community for their continued thoughts and prayers and outpouring of support for the four Harbor Police officers who were involved in the November 13, 2024 incident in Little Italy in which a suspect in a double homicide was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with our officers. We send our condolences to the families of the homicide victims and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this unimaginably difficult time.
The Harbor Police officer that was shot in the upper thigh/hip area is doing well, and his recovery is progressing in the right direction. We are happy to report he is home with his family to continue his recovery. We won't release any further details on his injuries, his condition, or his medical treatment, and his family asks for continued privacy. The other three officers are also doing well as they process last week's events.
I cannot emphasize it enough - all four of them are heroes. Their quick and decisive actions prevented any further tragedies. This incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers women and men in uniform face and the sacrifices they and their families make every single day while serving their communities.
Thank you again to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl and everyone at SDPD for all their support. We are also grateful to and want to commend the first responders and the UC San Diego Health team and staff who are taking amazing care of our officer and his family.
Finally, thank you to the Port of San Diego, to our entire team at the Harbor Police Department, to the San Diego Harbor Police Foundation, and to the San Diego Harbor Police Officers Association - we truly appreciate all you're doing for our officers and staff.
All questions about the investigation should be directed to the San Diego Police Department.
Please continue to keep our officers, their families, and our department in your thoughts and prayers.
- Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez
