U of M Crookston's inaugural CSI Camp has students learning hands-on investigation techniques
The University of Minnesota Crookston hosted its inaugural CSI Camp August 5 and 6 with 24 high school students visiting campus. Students worked on solving criminal cases by interviewing witnesses and processing scientific evidence. Over the course of two days, they had the opportunity to learn hands-on investigation techniques as they processed and investigated two mock crime scenes.
Working under the guidance of several law enforcement officers as well as the University's criminal justice and science faculty members, students worked in teams to gather physical evidence including fingerprints, fiber, and blood samples, then processed the evidence in the University's lab facilities.
"The opportunities in the criminal justice field have never been better," said Senior Lecturer and CSI Camp Co-Director David Seyfried, Ph.D. "We designed this camp to give students a glimpse of the exciting and varied careers an education in criminal justice can provide."
Following the program's success, the University will consider hosting a similar program in 2025.
