Black History Month 2025

John Chavis Memorial Park honors the achievements, history, and heritage of African American trailblazers. In honor of Black History Month, JCMP will host a series of events that celebrate the legacy of the African American Experience. All events are at no cost.

Honoring the Local Legend, Joseph Winters

Saturday, Feb. 1, 5 - 8 p.m.
How did famous musical acts such as Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, and Diana Ross find their way to Raleigh in the mid-1900s? They performed in our capital city due to the hard work and dedication of former Raleigh Police Department officer and music promoter, Joseph "Joe" Winters, Sr.

Join us to celebrate his pioneering actions through an educational presentation, a pop-up exhibit, a live band, and light refreshments.

Lessons for Littles

Saturday, Feb. 8, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Ages 0-6
It is the duty of older generations to inspire the next generation of leaders (while also having a lot of fun)! This event is geared towards children who are 6 years old and younger, and they will have the opportunity to sit in on scheduled story times, enjoy arts and crafts, and socialize with their peers. All activities will have an educational component that honors those who blazed the trails before them.

Chavis Museum of African American History and Culture

Saturday, Feb. 15, 11 a.m. -2 p.m.
For one day, and one day only, the community center is turning into a pop-up museum to celebrate different aspects of African American history and culture. You won't want to miss exhibits on important Black figures from sports, the arts, science, and more. There will be an interactive activity to go along with each exhibit for everyone in the family to enjoy!

Black-Owned Business Pop-Up Market

Saturday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Saturdays are for small businesses! Come shop from local entrepreneurs to round out the last Saturday of Black History Month. You will have the opportunity to support Black-owned businesses, enjoy local food trucks, and network with others. Come see what the vendors have in store!
