Expert Advisory Panel to support the review of the Public Works Act

Toitū Te WhenuaLand Information New Zealand (LINZ) is pleased to announce membership of the Expert Advisory Panel that will support the review of the Public Works Act 1981 (PWA).

This follows the announcement by Minister for Land Information, Chris Penk, that the Government is reviewing the PWA to make it easier to build critical infrastructure in New Zealand.

Charlotte von Dadelszen will chair the five-member group.

Also appointed are Spencer Webster, Paul Cassin, James Clareburt, and Pat Dougherty.

The Panel is convening from July to September and will provide independent specialist advice to LINZ, the agency responsible for administering the PWA and leading the review.

Draft legislation giving effect to any proposed changes to the PWA is intended to be introduced to Parliament in mid-2025.

The public will then have the opportunity to submit on any proposals through the Select Committee process.

The PWA provides powers to acquire land for delivering public works, such as roads, schools, and water services.

It sets out a process that must be followed to ensure the rights of private landowners are considered and protected, including the payment of compensation for any land acquired.
