Article by Dr. Kuhel:

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery month and is "A national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with mental and/or substance use disorder live a healthy and rewarding life."

The observance of National Recovery Month helps to reinforce the message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, and that prevention and treatment can assist patients to committing to lifelong recovery. Every year, millions of Americans are affected by drug and alcohol addiction. Since the successes of recovery often go unnoticed by much of the population, Recovery Month aims to celebrate these achievements. With more and more people sharing stories of their journey in recovery, a widespread movement has been made to shed light on the lives transformed through recovery.

UPMC Washington has multiple programs that can assist patients in their addiction recovery through our Medication Assisted Treatment clinics and partnership with local recovery agencies such as Greenbriar Treatment Center and Washington Drug & Alcohol. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, contact your family physician and ask about our programs. Our dedicated team strives to help our patients find the road to recovery and help to maintain a healthy and rewarding life.
