The Italian Capital's airports enable e-Gates also for minors over 12 years of age

New developments in sight for passengers arriving or departing from the "Leonardo da Vinci" airport in Fiumicino and from the "G.B. Pastine" airport in Ciampino and crossing the border of the Schengen area: starting from 7 October 2024, in collaboration with the Italian Central Directorate of Immigration and Border Police, Aeroporti di Roma has launched an initial test to extend the self-service use of electronic checkpoints (e-Gates) also to minors over the age of 12, accompanied by parents or legal guardians and holding an ordinary passport (or an Italian electronic ID card). Nothing changes for those over 14 already enabled to use the e-Gates when departing or arriving at the airport.

This new measure will increase the number of passengers who can use the e-Gates when crossing the border and is functional to promoting smoother transits at the borders of the two airports of the capital. This innovation also prepares to the imminent launch of the Entry Exit System (EES), the new border control system established by the EU which will affect NON-EU citizens crossing the borders of countries adhering to the Schengen Agreement.

Every year at the ADR terminals, well over 50% of travellers of all nationalities use the 82 electronic checkpoints installed at Fiumicino (71) and Ciampino (11) for electronic passport control, which significantly reduce waiting times, thus improving the passenger experience.
