Port of San Diego Receives Multiple Honors at the American Public Works Association 2024 Awards Program

The Port of San Diego is proud to announce receipt of two Honor Awards at the American Public Works Association (APWA) San Diego/Imperial Chapter's 2024 Annual Awards Program. The Port was recognized for its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal (TAMT) Renewable Microgrid project in the Sustainable/Green category and the Imperial Beach Pier Enhancements Phase II project took home honors in the Engineering category.

"This recognition from the local chapter of the APWA is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Port team," said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "These awards for our Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Microgrid and the Imperial Beach Pier Enhancements projects highlight our ongoing commitment to sustainable development, innovation in public works, and community enhancement."

The Port's TAMT Renewable Microgrid project consists of a solar photovoltaic array tied to a battery energy storage system and microgrid controller, providing emergency backup power to critical Port-operations on the terminal. The microgrid at TAMT is advancing the Port's use of renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions on and around the terminal, and supports and aligns with the Port's Climate Action Plan and Maritime Clean Air Strategy to advance zero emissions operations at TAMT.

For the Imperial Beach Enhancements Phase II project, the Port of San Diego and City of Imperial Beach made a series of improvements to the iconic Imperial Beach Pier to activate and beautify the area. The enhancements encourage people to explore and enjoy the pier, the ocean, and the surrounding amenities. Improvements include an artistic shade canopy with a shark and water design, surf destination arrows marking the distance and direction to legendary surf spots.

The APWA is a not-for-profit organization with more than 32,000 members involved in the field of public works. In 2017, the Port of San Diego became the first port in the United States to be awarded National Accreditation through the APWA. It was re-accredited in 2021 for another four years. The Accreditation program recognizes public agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally as contained in the APWA Public Works Management Practices Manual.
