FIFE - Travelers who use 54th Avenue across Interstate 5 in Fife will want to prepare for an around-the-clock weekend closure in mid-August.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 16 to the morning of Monday, Aug. 19, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repave the overpass. Crews also will provide a fresh surface for the northbound I-5 off- and on-ramps at 54th Avenue.
The weekend closure allows crews to do a significant amount of work in a short period of time. Final striping will be scheduled in late August or in September. All work is weather dependent.
In addition to providing travelers with a smoother ride, the project will extend the service life of the overpass and the northbound I-5 ramps. This is one of 11 highway preservation projects included in the 2024 supplemental transportation budget passed by the Legislature earlier this year.
WSDOT recognizes this is a very busy interchange. People who use these ramps and overpass are strongly encouraged to stay in touch by using WSDOT's travel tools.
Advance notice of closures and real-time information is available on the WSDOT app and statewide travel map. Sign up for email updates to get information about highway projects in Pierce County.
