Weekend closure scheduled for 54th Avenue over I 5 in Fife Aug. 16 19

Preservation project will bring new life to surface of busy roadway

FIFE - Travelers who use 54th Avenue across Interstate 5 in Fife will want to prepare for an around-the-clock weekend closure in mid-August.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 16 to the morning of Monday, Aug. 19, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repave the overpass. Crews also will provide a fresh surface for the northbound I-5 off- and on-ramps at 54th Avenue.

9 p.m. Friday Aug. 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19

  • The overpass will close to all traffic.
  • The northbound I-5 exit to 54th Avenue and the 54th Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close.
  • The southbound I-5 off-and on-ramps at 54th Avenue will remain open.

The weekend closure allows crews to do a significant amount of work in a short period of time. Final striping will be scheduled in late August or in September. All work is weather dependent.

In addition to providing travelers with a smoother ride, the project will extend the service life of the overpass and the northbound I-5 ramps. This is one of 11 highway preservation projects included in the 2024 supplemental transportation budget passed by the Legislature earlier this year.
