Lipscomb University launches new computer science non-degree endorsement program for Tennessee educators

New program provides pathway to endorsement for Tennessee K-12 teachers.

Lipscomb University's nationally recognized College of Education has launched a new computer science non-degree endorsement program for K-12 educators across Tennessee. This program, developed in collaboration with Lipscomb's School of Computing, aims to equip K-12 educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively teach computer science courses.

The endorsement program consists of four courses, totaling 12 class hours. Educators can choose to complete the program by taking two courses in the fall and two in the spring, or by enrolling in all four courses during the summer session. Courses are offered synchronously online to accommodate the busy schedules of educators.

Starting this fall, all middle and high school educators in Tennessee public schools must obtain a computer science endorsement to teach computer science courses. In addition, beginning in the 2024-25 school year, every public school middle and high school student in Tennessee will be required to take a computer science course. This initiative is part of the state's commitment to enhancing computer science education and preparing students for the demands of the digital age.

"Lipscomb University's College of Education is pleased to offer this new endorsement program," said Leslie Cowell, dean of the College of Education. "By collaborating with our School of Computing, we are ensuring that educators are equipped to inspire and educate students so they will be prepared to navigate the ever-changing digital landscape in which we live."

Educators who complete this endorsement can complete another graduate certificate in addition to one research course to turn this certificate program into a full Master of Education degree. The stackable master's degree (M.Ed.) allows candidate flexibility in crafting a degree program that is customized toward personal educational and career goals. Stackable options are available for licensed teachers, for initial license candidates and for those who seek to broaden their leadership skills in a variety of ways. In addition to the new computer science endorsement program, certificate programs are available in English Language Learning, Gifted Education & Advanced Academics, Instructional Coaching, Reading Specialty, Special Education, Leading in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and the Christian Educator Program. A new, fully online AI for Educators certificate is coming in summer 2025.

Lipscomb University's College of Education is renowned for its excellence in teacher preparation. Earlier this year, Lipscomb was recognized as one of the most effective teacher preparation programs in Tennessee for the 12th consecutive year, earning high marks on the 2023 Teacher Preparation Report Card released by the Tennessee State Board of Education. In June 2023, the National Council on Teacher Quality ranked the College of Education among the top in the nation for preparing future teachers in the science of reading. Additionally, in fall 2021, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) recognized Lipscomb University with the Frank Murray Leadership Recognition for Continuous Improvement. The college offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in a variety of academic programs and has received numerous accolades for its effectiveness.
