UHCL welcomes new dean of the College of Science and Engineering

Dr. Jennifer Irvin has been named the new dean of the College of Science and Engineeringat the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), effective August 1, 2024. With a strong academic background and over 15 years of experience at Texas State University, Dr. Irvin brings a proven track record of leadership and innovation to her new role.

Irvin completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Florida, following her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Chemistry from Texas State University. Dr. Irvin had a distinguished faculty career at Texas State, achieving the rank of full professor and making significant contributions in teaching and research.

In her leadership capacities, Irvin has successfully managed several strategic initiatives. As the director of the Materials Application Research Center (MARC) at Texas State University, she managed a $3M annual budget and significantly advanced applied research and entrepreneurship efforts. She also held directorial positions in the Shared Research Operations at Texas State and the Materials Science, Engineering, and Commercialization (MSEC) program, where her efforts were pivotal in identifying research opportunities and fostering innovation.

As dean, Irvin aims to prepare students for success by aligning the college's curriculum with the latest technological advancements and industry demands.

"Innovation is at the heart of STEM," said Irvin. "Our disciplines evolve rapidly, and we must keep up with the changes," she continued. "It is important that we identify opportunities to grow into new areas, developing programs to meet the evolving needs of the region and the interests of our students."

She is also committed to expanding the college's academic offerings and enhancing professional development opportunities for students, such as internships and cooperative education.

"I believe everyone in the College of Science and Engineering shares this goal," said Irvin. "It means equipping our students not only with the technical skills but also with the career opportunities they need to thrive."
