UC San Diego Extended Studies Showcase 2024 Highlights Collaborative Excellence

The theme of "Partnership and Collaboration" will take center stage on Thursday, September 18 at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies Showcase 2024. Hosted in the new 8980 Villa La Jolla Drive building--just across from UC San Diego's entrance at La Jolla Village Drive-the day's agenda will highlight the various services and benefits Extended Studies offers to supportcampus and community partners in achieving growth and innovation to meet their goals
"The Extended Studies Showcase is an exciting opportunity to illuminate the many capabilities that our Division has on diverse fronts-and how they can be harnessed by our campus partners in the realms of Research, Education, Training, or Outreach," said Dean Hugo Villar. "We put this event together to explore innovative ways to advance the University's mission and strategic goals, reinforcing and expanding the amazing capabilities present in the colleges, schools, and departments of one of the top Research Universities in the nation.
The state-of-the-art 8980 building is conveniently accessible to campus participants from the bridge across La Jolla Village Drive.
Through dynamic collaborations with various campus units, Extended Studies supports research programs, develops innovative educational offerings, and sponsors meaningful partnerships with community organizations. Our diverse range of services includes grant research assistance, program administration, customized professional training, business and market analysis and community engagement initiatives. Join us to learn more about how we provide essential support for everything from master's programs to pre-college initiatives, and discover the myriad ways we enhance the educational landscape at UC San Diego. To demonstrate how Extended Studies supports high-impact partnerships and collaborations, Showcase 2024 will feature program success stories, a resource fair, and sessions on innovative collaborations and grant development.
The day kicks off with an opportunity to experience the state-of-the-art 8980 facility, conveniently accessible to campus participants from the bridge across La Jolla Village Drive. Attendees will enjoy a light breakfast, followed by a leadership welcome with Hugo Villar, Dean of Extended Studies, who will set the tone for a day focused on powerful synergies that can yield results.
From there, attendees can participate in informative sessions that will illustrate how to amplify their projects and programs.
Partnering for excellence
Extended Studies Showcase 2024 is all about igniting ideas for collaborative impact. Therefore, the first session is a panel discussion, "Partnering for Excellence with Extended Studies" featuring UC San Diego campus experts who have worked with Extended Studies on key projects. They will share their insights on how collaboration across disciplines and sectors can enhance educational and research outcomes.
Panelists and projects include:
Wael Al-Delaimy, MD, PhD, Professor of Global Health
The California American Indian Tobacco Initiative Evaluation (CAITIE), based in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, evaluates the California Department of Public Health, California Tobacco Control Program's (CTCP), California American Indian Initiative to Reduce Tobacco-Related Disparities statewide funding initiative. Professor Al-Delaimy will talk about the partnership with the Center for Research and Evaluation at Extended Studies to meet the goals of conducting an independent examination of the process and outcomes of the initiative.
Sara Allard, Deputy Director, UC San Diego Athletics
As of Summer 2024, there's a new campus collaboration to offer an academic option to UC San Diego scholar-athletes who have completed a baccalaureate degree and have one or more years of NCAA eligibility remaining. These scholar-athletes may now enroll in select certificate programs offered through UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies while competing in their final period of athletic eligibility. Allard will address this valuable partnership with Extended Studies and the benefit to students.
Karen Flammer, Director of Digital Learning, UC San Diego Teaching + Learning Commons
Flammer will discuss the partnership to develop Discover UC San Diego, a digital learning program that allows high school students at public schools to take online college courses free of charge. A collaboration with the Division of Extended Studies, the Office of Educational Innovation, and a number of school districts, the program demonstrates the university's commitment to serving the San Diego community and all California residents by reducing inequities and providing access to high-quality higher educational opportunities.
Joseph Ma, PharmD, FCP, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy
Since 2016, Extended Studies has partnered with Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to administer a first-of-its-kind Masters of Science combined degree in both Drug Development and Product Management. Professor Ma will discuss the collaboration that is training the best and brightest minds to answer pharmaceutical and biotech workforce demands.

These partnerships span diverse projects where we provide essential support and offer our intellectual acumen in outreach, training, and adult and precollege education," said Dean Villar. "Through these collaborations, we enhance programs across the university, creating a stronger, more vibrant research and educational community."
Perspectives on partnerships, programs and collaboration
Following the panel conversation, a breakout session, "Perspectives on Partnerships, Programs, and Collaboration," will feature leaders from Extended Studies discussing innovative strategies that have successfully built bridges between the university and the wider community.
Resident experts, such as Laura Fandino, Assistant Dean of Public and Continuing Education, and Shannon McDonald, Director of Corporate Education, will share insights from successful programs and projects with campus departments, industry partners, and nonprofit organizations. Their case studies will illuminate the variety of possibilities for collaboration.
Resource fair
Extended Studies Showcase 2024 will include a Program Resource Fair, allowing attendees to explore the range of services available to campus and community partners.
Attendees can meet and speak with representatives to learn about opportunities for collaboration and support from service and academic areas of interest. Participating units include:
Center for Research and Evaluation (CR+E)- the research division of UC San Diego Extended Studies, the Center supports grant development, applied research and evaluation, collective impact and institutional research
Education and Community Outreach - representing Pre-Collegeprograms, Educationprograms for professional, parent and community partners and programming for learners age 50 and over at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute/OLLI.
International Programs- offering English language, university credit, professional certificate, and customized programs for personal, academic, and professional development of international constituents
The following Extended Studies academic areas will be present, as well: Arts & Humanities, Healthcare Education, Technology, Engineeringand the Office of Advanced Professional Education and Development.

Developing collaborative grant proposals
Eugene Yoo, Proposal Development and Grant Writer for Extended Studies will conclude the day with a presentation on developing collaborative grant proposals. More and more funders and grant programs are encouraging collaborative proposals, and Extended Studies can be a partner to add value to a grant application and help navigate the submission process for a project that involves cross-departmental collaboration.
Grant Development is one of the services offered by the Center for Research and Evaluation (CR+E), the research unit within Extended Studies, and helps clients secure external funding for research, academic programs, and community partnerships. Specific support areas include identifying external funding opportunities, writing grants, and managing the submission process.
Yoo will be joined by Josh D. Shapiro, CR+E Chief Impact and Strategy Officer and campus colleagues from the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health & Human Longevity Science, who will demonstrate how the Division of Extended Studies can leverage a diverse portfolio of programs, services, and community partnerships to enhance a proposal or help meet essential solicitation requirements.
