Seeking participants for study on Fire Preparedness for Wheelchair Users

The Disability Participation and Quality of Life (DPQOL) lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is conducting a research study to educate people who use wheelchairs and scooters on fire prevention and management strategies. Topics include: Prevention of fires, evacuation planning, communication with fire fighters, and managing life after a fire.

Goal of the project:

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive educational program that will enable people to who use wheelchairs to prevent and management fire events.

What will I be asked to do?

Participation in this study involves the following activities:

  1. Online surveys (~45 mins)
  2. Participate in an orientation session to learn about the study intervention (~30 mins)
  3. Engage in the online study intervention over a period of six weeks. This involves watching ~45 min of videos per week and participating in a 1-hour online discussion with a firefighter, therapist, and other people who use wheelchairs/scooters.
  4. Complete follow-up surveys and participate in an interview with a research assistant (~1.5 hours)

Participants will receive $50 upon completing the first survey and $100 after completing the second survey and interview. Total = $150

Who can participate?

To participate, you must be:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Use a wheelchair or scooter for at least 75% of mobility
  • Have access to an internet-capable device (smartphone, tablet, computer)
  • Have internet access
  • Be able and willing to use Zoom video-conferencing software
