In the spring of 2024, a widening crack between the two large stems of Finch Arboretum's massive 78-year-old willow tree was discovered by staff. The area surrounding the tree was quickly fenced off for safety while an assessment could be made. City arborists and hired consultants reviewed the tree and concluded it could not be made safe by adding hardware or propping parts of the tree up, and the tree eventually failed within the safety zone. Unfortunately, willows are known to be short-lived, so it is not uncommon for this tree to fail at this age.

Parks & Recreation is now looking for public input on what to do with the willow tree and the area it occupied. Take a single-question survey to share your opinion!
