COLUMBUS - State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) today released the following statement in response to the guilty verdict of former Columbus Police Office Adam Coy in the murder of Andre Hill:
"I pray for the family of Andre Hill and I hope today brings some sort of closure to the unimaginable nightmare they have been living for almost four years. I will always remember Andre and I will do whatever I can to make sure his death was not in vain. His family and his community deserve nothing less," said Rep. Jarrells. "It is vital we as a community come together to ensure Andre's legacy is one of positive change that will ensure this heartbroken loss can never happen again."
In 2021, Rep. Jarrells and former State Rep., now Franklin County Commissioner Erica Crawley, introduced House Bill (HB) 367. Andre's Law would have established clear guidelines on the use of force, added officer training, called for a requirement of body cameras to increase transparency, and prioritized community involvement in shaping policing policies.
Rep. Jarrells intends on reintroducing the bill in the 136th General Assembly.
