The Stony Brook University women's soccer team held off Monmouth, 2-1, on November 9 to win its first-ever CAA championship, and will face off against fourth seed Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament.
The Seawolves, making their fifth-ever NCAA tourney appearance, will visit the Nittany Lions on Saturday, November 16, in University Park, Pennsylvania. Game time is 6 pm and can be viewed on ESPN+.
Stony Brook won the CAA title at home thanks to goals by Linn Beck and Luciana Setteducate, and outstanding goalkeeping by Nicolette Pasquarella. Stony Brook led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 until the 79th minute, when Monmouth drew within one. Beck was named Most Outstanding Player. Setteducate assisted on Beck's game-winning goal in the second half.
"Credit to my staff who worked relentlessly all year! We prepared the team to play a more defensive game as we knew we had to take some space away from Monmouth's offensive players," head coach Tobias Bischof said. "The team did an amazing job buying in and we scored two fantastic goals. I'm proud of every single player as it takes the whole team to win a championship."
Stony Brook finished the CAA season with a 7-1-2 record and is 14-3-3 overall. Penn State is ranked 22nd in the nation. The Seawolves are looking for their first-ever NCAA tournament victory.
